WoW Hunter Against Mages
Mages
Theoretically, hunters should cream mages pretty easily since we can use any of our number of interrupts to stop their casts. However, mages also have an easy time staying in our dead zone and tearing us apart from relative safety there, so the counterbalance of these two factors makes this fight very dynamic.
The key to fighting mages, as with most other DPS classes, is to stay at kiting range. Mages will try to blink or sprint into our deadzone, frost nova us in place, and then proceed to nuke us down. If you are frozen in deadzone, use feign death or scattershot at the last second to interrupt the nuke. Our trinket can also get us out of nova, but we will still typically need to scatter the mage in order to get out of range. A well timed silencing shot can also keep the mage from nova-ing us; silence the mage right before he blinks and continue running away.
Frost
Frost mages have the capability of summoning water elementals, which do decent damage and should be burned down if possible. Elementals, like all pets, have zero resilience and thus will die fairly quickly. A good time to kill the elemental is while the mage is ice blocked.
When a mage ice blocks, get to maximum range, lay down a trap, and watch your enemy cast bars to time an aimed shot or steady shot to hit the mage right as his block expires.
PoM
Most non-frost mages will be PoM/Pyro spec, meaning that they can occasionally instant-cast a 6-second ranged attack for massive damage. Stacking resilience and fire resistance is helpful against PoM/pyro mages. They are somewhat one-shot wonders in that after they've expended their pyroblast, they are not difficult to take down assuming that we have enough health remaining.
