Starting out in Nortshire Abbey

After a brief cutscene you will find yourself outside of Northshire Abbey. Now would be a great time to adjust your settings (I highly suggest turning on “Instant Quest Text” in the interface options) and get comfortable with movement. Directly in front of where you start should be a guard known as Deputy Willems.

Walk up to Deputy Willems and right click him on him (notice the golden ! above his head, this means he has a quest for you). He’ll give you the quest A Threat Within. Simply walk inside of the abbey and speak with Marshal McBride. He’ll be a yellow dot on your minimap if you can’t find him. He’ll reward you for reporting to him and give you the quest called Kobold Camp Cleanup. Head outside and talk to Deputy Willems once more. He’ll offer the quest Eagen Peltskinner. Head around to the northwest side of the abbey and speak with Eagen Peltskinner (look for a yellow dot on your mini-map). He’ll offer a new quest Wolves Across the Border. Now it’s time to get to the fun stuff, actual combat!

Right near our good friend Mr. Peltskinner you will find plenty of Young Wolves. You’ll need to slay these wolves in order to obtain the item [Tough Wolf Meat]. After you have gained 8 pieces of wolf meat, turn your attention towards the Kobolds to the north.

Quick Tip: Combat (Click to View)
World of Warcraft has a very simple and easy to understand combat system. There are three things to understand about combat. The first is that you need to stay alive (the red bar in the upper left hand corner shows your health), the second is that you need to kill the enemy (using your skills and melee attack), and the third is that you need to rest after each fight so that you go into each and every fight with no handicaps.

Quick Tip: Buff Skills (Click to View)
Some classes have buff skills that are very helpful during combat. For instance, mages have “Frost Armor” that increases there defense and greatly increases their ability to survive. Before any battle it is always a good idea to make sure these skills are active.

Inside of the little camp you’ll notice two types of Kobolds. They are “Kobold Workers” and “Kobold Vermin”. For this quest you’ll need to slay the “Kobold Vermin” in order to continue. They are slightly more difficult then the wolves, but at the same time any level one of any class should have no problem with them. Take out 10 of them and head back towards Northshire Abbey.

Quick Tip: Sharing the World (Click to View)
World of Warcraft has an ongoing persistent world that you share with other players. While fighting these kobolds and wolves you may find other players fighting them as well. Anytime a player attacks an enemy first, that enemy is effectively “tagged” as theirs (with its name going grey). This means that if you attack it you will get no XP for it and only helping them. Don’t worry though, as most non-boss enemies respawn near instantly so there should always be plenty of enemies for you to slay.

By now you should be level two, congratulations are in order! Turn in the wolf meat to our good friend Eagen Peltskinner. He’ll offer you two different rewards and you will have to pick which one is right for you. If you are a Mage, Warlock, or Priest then pick the Soft Fur-line Shoes. If you are a Warrior, Rogue, or Paladin then pick up the Wolfskin Bracers. Any item that you can not equip will be highlighted in red.

With the wolves taken care of, return to Marshal Mcbride inside of the abbey. Turn in the Kobold quest which should put you at or near level three! Marshal Mcbride will now offer two new quests, one of them is Investigate Echo Ridge and the other is to deliver a letter to your class trainer. Pick them both up and head for your class trainer to purchase skills. If you can’t find your trainer, have a look at the letter he gave you. It’ll tell you where to look. Remember to buy any skill you can afford, since they will give you a good advantage in the upcoming fights.

Head to outside entrance of the abbey and speak with Deputy Willem again. He’ll offer the quest Brotherhood of Thieves, which we will do in a few minutes. Right now there are more Kobolds that need to be slain! Head back to the Kobold camp that was near Mr. Peltskinner and this time take out the Kobold Workers. After you have slain ten of them, return to the abbey and turn the quest in. You’ll be offered a new quest called Skirmish at Echo Ridge. We’ll worry with that quest later, right now the vineyards are under the control of a rogue group of thieves!

Quick Tip: Aggresive Enemies (Click to View)
Enemies that have yellow names are considered “neutral” while enemies with red names are “aggressive”. This means that they will attack you as soon as they see you. Each enemy has a different range in which they will attack, so be careful around them! Often times you can be overwhelmed with aggressive enemies if you are not careful.

Before now you should be pretty secure with the enemies you fight, as long as you didn’t attack too many. With aggressive enemies though it is different, they can bunch up on you without you realizing it. So you may have a situation where you can’t flee, you can’t fight, and even though your cause is noble, you can’t continue. When you character falls (its hit points reaching zero) your spirit will resurrect at a nearby graveyard. You have two options, one is to spirit rez (giving you a death debuff for 10minutes after so much use) and the other is to go to your corpse and resurrect there. Either way, you do not lose XP. You only lose 10% durability to all items, which can be fixed with coin.

The Defias Thugs have the vineyard under their control, but this can not stand! Begin the assault and claim 12 [Red Burlap Bandanas] from your fallen foes. They drop quite often and should be no problem to collect in a jiffy. While you are launching the assault on the Defias you should hit level four. Every two levels you (generally) have new skills you can purchase, so next time in town remember to stop by your class trainer!

After you’ve shown the Defias who is boss, head back to Deputy Willem and claim your just rewards! You’ll be given an option of various weapons, pick one that best suits your play style and a new quest to seek out Milly Osworth and Bounty on Garrick Padfoot. Equip your new weapon and head to the Echo Ridge Mine and slay twelve Kobold Laborers. They are more difficult then regular Kobolds, but should be no problem for you.

Head back to the abbey once again and visit Marshal McBride. You should now be very close to level five (if not level five). Pick up the quest Report to Goldshire. Now head to the back of the Northshire Abbey and speak with Milly Osworth. She’ll offer you the quest Milly’s Harvest.

It’s time to act like a ninja! Cross the river and sneak around the edge of where all of the Defias are until you reach a shack where Garrick Padfoot resides. By sneaking around the Defias encampment you can avoid unnecessary battle with the bad Defias people who do not like you. It’s faster to skip all of the nobodies and head right to the somebody. Besides, you’ll be fighting a ton of them soon.

Quick Tip: Garrick Padfoot Boss Fight Hints (Click to View)
Garrick Padfoot won’t go down easily. Solo you may have a problem with him, although most classes can easily take him out before his buddies finish you off. If you find you are having a problem with him then ask around for some help. Sometimes you can find other people who need to do the same quest, which is where you can group up and concentrate your efforts. As for tactics to defeat Garrick Padfoot, just concentrate all of your firepower on him and ignore his buddies.

With Garrick Padfoot out of your way, head towards the fenced in vineyard. There are baskets of apples scattered all around and you need to pick them up (right click on the basket). The only problem is that the nearby Defias will interrupt you if they attack while you are picking up the baskets. So be sure to clear out any nearby Defias and claim your shiny red morsels of tasty quest completion.

Quick Tip: Inventory Space (Click to View)
Most quest items go directly into your inventory. You will probably be running out of inventory space soon, so it’s always a good idea to make sure your inventory has plenty of space before heading out into battle. Later on you can purchase bags which increase the space in your inventory.

Return to Milley Osworth and turn in Milly’s Harvest. She’ll give you the quest Grape Manifest. Head for the abbey and turn in the Bounty of Garrick Padfoot quest. Do not get the cloak if you can not wear mail armor (there is a reason for this). After you’ve handled that, head inside of the abbey to find Brother Neals. He’s at the top, so you’ll have to climb a few sets of stairs. Pick up the reward (you have a choice between mail gloves and a cloak). You are now officially finished with the Northsire Abbey and it’s time to head out towards Goldshire!

Northshire Abbey is guarded by a rather large defensive wall, but luckily enough for us we are quite friendly with the local guards and can come and go as we please. Set out on the road going south and through the wall. On your way will be a man who will offer the quest Rest and Relaxation. Go ahead and grab it and continue south on the road towards Goldshire. Be careful not to stray from the road, bandits are known to inhibit these parts.

When you arrive to Goldshire go ahead and look around a bit, do a little shopping (don’t spend much money! you need to buy more skills soon). Search out your class trainer here as well. When you are finished sight seeing, find Marshal Dughan who will offer the quest  The Fargodeep Mine. Talk to the nearby Remy “Two Times” and pick up the Gold Dust Exchange quest as well.

Head towards the inn and have a chat with the innkeeper to turn in that quest you got on the way here. When finished be sure to set your home to Goldshire (the innkeeper will explain how this works) with the innkeeper. Turn towards the wall close to the exit and find William Pestle. He’ll give you the quest Kobold Candles.

Quick Tip: Quest Efficiency (Click to View)
Quest efficiency is very important in keeping your progress through the game as fast as possible. Sometimes there will be a group of quests for the same enemies that can be completed all at once. That’s why you should pick up as many quests as possible before heading out into a dungeon or an enemy encampment.

Leave out of town and go straight south. Refer to our map on page one if you get lost. When you get there, slay the various Kobold Tunnelers while making your way inside of the mine. You’ll eventually get a notice saying you have explored the cave, in which case you should begin working your way back out. Be sure to complete both the candle and gold dust quests. When you’ve explored the mine and got all of the candles and gold dusts that are needed then head back to Goldshire.

When you arrive in Goldshire be sure to turn in all three quests. You’ll receive a few new ones: The Jasperload Mine and Shipment to Stormwind. Train any skills you need (evey 2 levels new skills generally become available), restock, and maybe even take a break (grab a snack and a fresh drink!). When you are finished head south again, but avoid the mine. We are going to the Stonefield Farm which is slightly westward.

Quick Tip: Rested EXP/Inns (Click to View)
World of Warcraft rewards those who take a break. Anytime you log out in an Inn you will start earning rested experience. This rested exp gives you double exp on all enemies you slay until it has depleted. So anytime you take a break, technically you are earning XP as well! So be sure to take frequent breaks and log out in an inn (use your hearthstone for quick and easy access, it is in your inventory).

When you arrive at the farm, pick up the two available quests Lost Necklace and Princess Must Die! Head to the eastern vineyard, known as the Maclure Vineyards and find a little boy named Billy. Speak to him and he will give you the necklace for pie (Pie for Billy). While here pick up Young Lovers from Maybell Maclure located in a house to the south of the vineyard. Head to the field and slay the wild boars until you obtain four pieces of good quality meat. When done, head back over to the Stonefield Farm. Boy these family feuds are a ton of foot work!

“Auntie” Bernice Stonefield will cook up your pie and send you Back to Billy. Before you go, be sure seek out Tommy Joe Stonefield near the river then head up to Gramma up at the farm (Note to William). When done head back to Billy.

Billy will eat the pie and tell you he doesn’t have the necklace. Hold back your sword and pick up the quest Goldtooth. All of this footwork should put you at level seven. Well earned I must say!

Return to Goldshire and head to the Lion’s Pride Inn. Remember our good friend William? Well he’s the one that can help mix a potion to get these two love birds together. He’ll take the quest you got from ‘ol Gramma and give you the Collecting Kelp quest. Head to the nearby Crystal Lake, with your weapon ready of course, and launch an assault against the Murlocs! Yes the famous Murlocs are located right here and ready to gang up on you at any minute. It won’t take long to collect the kelp, unless the Murlocs rough you up to hard. When finished head back to William and pick up The Escape.

Now head into the Fargodeep Mine and choose one of two options. The first option is to run all the way to the back of the mine (following the left path) to get to Goldtooh and dieing. Then as a spirit walk back to your corpse and resurrect in a safe spot. This avoids all of the Kobolds between the entrance and the back of the cave. It does involve death though, and you might accidentally aggro something when you resurrect. The other way is to fight your way to the back which takes longer (but gives a lot more XP). Choose whichever way you want to go and get to Goldtooth. Slay this beast and obtain the necklace.

Head back to the Stonefield farm and return the necklace.  Then head to the Maclure vineyards and turn in The Escape. With these quests done, it’s time to move on towards the east! Return to Goldshire and pick up the quest A Fishy Peril from ‘ol “Two Times” and turn it into Marshal Dughan who will give you Further Concerns. Head northeast towards the Jasperload Mine and make a quick run inside to “explore” it then run back out, similar to the way you “explored” the Fargodeep Mine. Then head east (getting back on the road) until you meet Guard Thomas at a bridge. Turn in Further Concerns and pickup both Find the Lost Guards and Protect the Frontier. Check our map for the first body, then head towards the logging camp.

Inside of the logging camp pick up A Bundle of Trouble and Red Linen Goods. Outside of the camp start taking out the Prowlers and bears needed for Protect the Frontier and pickup the wood. Turn in A Bundle of Trouble and you should be at level eight or near it. Head to the murloc camp and start clearing around the corpse of the second guard (see our map once more for the location). This can be difficult, but persistence will win the day.

Turn in Report to Thomas (given by the guards remains) and Protect the Frontier to Guard Thomas. He’ll give you Deliver Thomas’ Report. Now we need to handle some of those Defias nogooders! You have two options. Option one is for casters, who can go to Hero’s Vigil and fight Defias Rogue Mages for the red linen bandanas. Melee types can go to the Brackwell Pumpkin Patch and fight the warrior type Defias who are easier for melees. Either way, get the Red Linene Bandanas and return to the logging camp for your reward.

On your way to Goldshire be sure to stop at the Brackwell Pumpkin Patch and take care of Princess. You should be over level eight by now, which is enough to solo the Princess with potions. If you can’t take her out, then get a group! Either way now would be a good time to finish the quest since you won’t be heading in this direction again for awhile.

Return to Goldshire and talk to Marshal Dughan and turn in The Jasperlode Mine and Deliver Thomas’ Report. Pick up Cloth and Leather Armor, Westbrook Garrison Needs Help! and Report to Gryan Stoutmantle. Talk to Smith Argus and pick up Elmore’s Task. By now you should be level nine.

Repair your gear, buy skills, restock, and other things. Maybe even take another break and grab yourself a drink or snack. Head toward the farm and turn in the Princess quest and then head westward along the road until you arrive at a barracks.

When you arrive at the barracks speak with Deputy Rainer and pick up Riverpaw Gnoll Bounty and Wanted: Hogger from a nearby sign. Head south and take on the gnolls for their painted gnoll armbands. You should also take on Hogger (you will probably need a group for him). When you are finished turn in the gnoll armbands and head for Goldshire.

Quick Tip: Elite Enemies (Click to View)
Some enemies are really challenging. These are called elites, they have a golden dragon around their picture. Elites are very hard to solo and sometimes are even impossible for one, five, or even less then thirty people to take down. Hogger is the first elite should meet and he shows it. You may have to wait until his quest is green or find someone to help before you can take him. Though, with potions (like the ones you got as a reward) you can probably take him. It's worth a try! Be sure to clear the area around him, though.

Turn in the Hogger quest to the Marshal which should at this point get you to level ten. If you aren’t level ten yet (but near it) then go around and kill some random things to level up. When you are level ten speak to your class trainer in town to get a quest to head to Stormwind.

From here, head to Stormwind and turn in all of the quests you have for Stormwind. When you are finished, leave Stormwind and head west toward Westfall. That’s your next destination; having completed all there is to do at these levels for Elwynn Forest! Congratulations, you should now be done with ten out of sixty levels and ready for much more dangerous adventures!
